Houses

My inspiration for these houses came while I was an artist-in-residence in Chile (Curaumilla Art Center). I spent time in Valparaiso, a city of hills and colorful old Victorian homes in various states of repair.

It was once referred to as the jewel of the pacific, but while its glory days are in the past, it now attracts artists, cultural entrepreneurs, and tourists attracted to the hillside historic district that looks out to the pacific ocean.

Many of the houses are covered in murals; some depicting nature’s beauty and others the destruction of the natural world. Others reference various political views. I loved these funky old houses; some upcycled with shipping containers; a nod to its past history as the major port for south America.

My small wall-mounted houses reflect my concerns for life today in these uncertain times of political upheaval and cultural change, which is more challenging with AI and our societal divisions.

How do we know what is truth anymore?

Who do we trust?
